Genderfluid Lesbians

A helpful guide to lesbian genderfluidity.

What is a genderfluid lesbian?

A genderfluid lesbian is, simply, a lesbian who also identifies as genderfluid. Meaning: their gender identity fluctuates, and their sexuality is women-oriented.

What does it mean to be genderfluid?

Genderfluid (a.k.a. Gender Fluid, Gender-Fluid, Fluid Gender) refers to a gender identity/gender expression that is not fixed, and fluctuates over time. A genderfluid person may present as "multiple genders at once and then switch to none at all, or move between single gender identities, or some other combination therein" (Nonbinary Wiki, unknown author). It is widely considered to fall under the non-binary, transgender, and multigender category, though genderfluid individuals may identify as more or none of these.

People who identify as genderfluid can use any pronouns, but their pronouns may also fluctuate to fit their identity.

FAQ

How can someone be both genderfluid and a lesbian? How does that work?

Just like non-binary people, genderfluid people are not constrained to specific sexualities. People who are genderfluid can be straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, etc. Like non-binary, genderfluidity is a spectrum, and no two people experience it the exact same way. If a genderfluid individual feels that lesbian most accurately describes their sexuality, then they are more than welcome to use that label!

But if you're a man half of the time...

Genderfluidity is a spectrum. Genderfluid people do not only fluctuate between traditional male and female identities, but between non-binary identities as well, or from binary to non-binary, and so on. There is no set 'flavor' of genderfluid, pun intended; as long as your gender identity fluctuates, you could consider yourself genderfluid. A genderfluid person who fluctuates between woman-aligned and unaligned gender identities (or experiences a combination of genders at times) while also being attracted exclusively to women/woman-aligned nonbinary may identify as a genderfluid lesbian because it is the closest possible label that describes them.

Regardless, all genderfluid lesbians have a unique connection to their identity, and no one explanation could possibly cover them all.

What pronouns should genderfluid lesbians use?

Genderfluid lesbians, like everyone else, can use any pronouns that make them feel comfortable, including neopronouns!

Why not say 'genderfluid gynesexual' instead?

The term gynesexual/gynosexual, while not having a concrete definition, typically means attraction to 'female anatomy' (hence the prefix gyne/gyno) regardless of gender identity, and is not synonymous with lesbian. Furthermore, this term is often considered transphobic, as it is "commonly used by transphobes as a reason to exclude trans women" (LGBTA Wiki) and some may not want to use the label for that reason.

I think I might be a genderfluid lesbian...

Congratulations! You're so valid and we're behind you in support! If you're still questioning, that's fine too! Definitely check out the resources provided in our guide section, or reach out to us at gfluidbians on Twitter!

I still don't understand this.

That's fine! What matters is you took the time to research, which means a lot. All I ask is that you respect those who identify this way, because they're valid and need your support now more than ever. Thank you!

Flag

This is the new genderfluid lesbian flag! Though there was nothing wrong with the old one, I wanted to create a fresher alternative! Below are the meanings of each of the stripes.

This flag is completely free-to-use for merch, profiles, resources, and so on! No need to credit, although I would love to see how it's used!
